Who gives a damn about the index? Individual names are melting day after day. 25% of the index is KMP and EPD. Joe have you made money in MLP's while the index has held 290? I would guess that you have not.
I have pointed out the fact that the index is biased to Kinder and Enterprise many times. Still it is an average that gives us something to go by..distorted or not.
As to making money i both trade and have long term holds. My mlp trades have done okay up until very recently and they are based on extremes that occur because of spreads. So the answer to your question is yes i have been making some money with the index going sideways but it has gotten more and more difficult.
If the overall market breaks down here i think it will become impossible to make money. Just be thankful thses are what they are and that they are not financials.
