This seems to illustrate the severity of the recession (or worse) that we're going through.
Part of Volvo's problems might be currency related ( making them less competitive in the EU, than truckmakers from weak currency markets ), but some part of the problem might be credit related, along with demand related ( stretching additional life out of existing trucks rather than buying new trucks in a questionable business enviornment ).
Nevertheless a 99.7% decline in orders is a stunning number, with repercussions up and down the supply chain for Volvo suppliers.
I'd suspect if this isn't confined to Volvo, there will be less demand for steel, coal ( to make coke for steel ), Aluminum, etc.

European truckmakers face 'sharpest downturn'
By Robert Anderson in Stockholm
Friday Oct 24 2008 18:15
Two of Europe's largest truckmakers on Friday warned that the market was facing its worst downturn as customers delayed or cancelled orders because of the global financial crisis.
Orders at Volvo (NASDAQ:VOLVY) , the world's second-largest truckmaker, fell 55 per cent in the third quarter year-on-year, and in Europe it had almost as many cancellations as new orders. Volvo recorded just 115 net order bookings for new trucks in Europe, down from 41,970 a year earlier - a 99.7 per cent drop.
"We're heading towards the sharpest downturn I've ever seen in Europe," Leif Johansson, Volvo chief executive, told analysts.
