If the current political situation interests you...read this and prepare to be frightened! Thanks to the WSJ.

8 point winner today on the MLP index which was off the highs. Market sold off in the last hour as the volitility continues to be nothing short of spectacular. Still i thought there was a better feel to the tape for the most part. Now the question is will we need to go back down and retest that 7880 intraday low?

Wow, that sure is a scary article!

I'm hoping our little corner of the investment world is a safe haven. Increasing the dividend tax will hurt a bit; the deferred capital gains tax will keep long-term MLP holders safe until (hopefully) the pendulum swings back in the other direction four years from now.

The sector might start getting greater interest as investors look for places to shield their assets from a tax-hungry Congress. But could too much investor interest lead to the loss of MLP's tax-favored status?

Loss of tax favored status?. I don't believe so. Not enough tax revenues and MLP's business model needs tax benefits.

That WSJ writer sounds like he pines for the days of the Robber Barons. We are already paying an effective tax rate of 50% in the USA when u add up all the secondary taxes we are subjected to. One should travel thru the so called socialist W.Europe countries such as Denmark. They pay 50% but, are getting many more benefits. Free health care, etc.

This is not a scary article to me. A much scarier alternative to me would another 8 years of Republican conservatism run-amuck. Eight years ago the Republicans were left a budget surplus. Eight years later, the main topic of conversation is whether or not we're on the brink of the next depression.THAT's SCARY!!!

Sometimes the kids need to be given the keys to the car so that those who say they can drive it will then see that yes they can but straight into a wall. People need to take history classes so that they can be reminded that the only place the left drives the economy is into the ground!

"the only place the left drives the economy is into the ground!"

Wow, what a remark! From where we are now under Bush, getting to ground level would be a great improveent!

Historically, the market has done better with a dem in the whitehouse. I know that's a surprising stat for a lot of poeple.

"Eight years ago the Republicans were left a budget surplus."

--------------------------------
Certainly the Republicans did a poor job when it came to controlling the budget, but in a sense there was a grand bi-partisan deal. Each party got it's main priorities... and our children got the bill.

There was never a real Clinton budget surplus.

There was smoke and mirrors congressional accounting, and projections based on the Nasdaq 100 bubble ( which was not sustainable ).

If there were an actual surplus ( if one removed the questionable congressional accounting ) it would cause the national debt to fall.

The last time the national debt fell was in 1957.

The links below are the US Treasury's accounting of the national debt from 1950-2008

In reality an Obama presidency would probably be okay provided democrats don't get 60 seats. The fear is the loon left would be in completely control and that would push through such a radical destructive agenda. Of course if they are too loony..there is always the next election cycle.

I think the democrats have been in control of two houses. What have they done! Barney Franks has preided over this banking disaster. He should resign.
I am not a republican but am not satisfied with our politicians at all. I would love to see them all voted out.

I am a conservative, but I am no longer able to call myself a Republican, so I am politically homeless. The Republicans have completely ruined the concept of conservatism by perverting it for political purposes. So, conservatism is not the problem, the Republicans are.

To assume that the Democrats, who are eschewing conservatism, will therefore be able to fix things, completely misses the mark. Liberalism is not the antidote to Republicanism. True Conservatism is.
