THE TESTING CONTINUES

I'm on the road today as i have some college shopping to do. Of course given the times we live in i'm going to expect the government to pay for it. Meantime its a down open as the markets are in full retest mode for the Dow and getting closer for the S&P and Nasdaq. MLP index still well above its November lows down near 150. And MLPS are still up for the year based on the index.

I should be back late this afternoon.

My son is also shopping for colleges. He has already been accepted to Oneonta, Oswego, Plattsburgh, Potsdam, Ithaca, Drexel,
and Towson. We're waiting for acceptance ( or rejection ) to New Paltz, Albany, Binghamton, Syracuse, Case Western, and Tulane.

We have been visiting schools on decent weather weekends. We've been to Oneonta, Ithaca, and Albany.

One thing we're considering is the Falculty / Student ratio. Binghamton has a 20/1 ratio while New Paltz has a 13/1 ratio. Tulane is 9/1. Of course Tulane is a 50k a year package if there is no scholarship money. NY State Schools
without scholarships are about 17K (including R+B) a year for residents.

My Son's Plan "A" is a career as a Physician.

Plan "B" is a another professional track IE Physical Therapist.

Plan "C" is a Science Teacher.

My "smartest" Cousin was accepted to Johns Hopkins in an engineering
track and found going from the smartest student in his High School to the bottom 15% at JH was a shock, He graduated from JH with an engineering degree, but never practiced as an engineer.

Sometimes it's better to be a big fish in a small pond... that's why my son is strongly considering New Paltz ( even if he is accepted to Tulane, or Case Western ).

As to MLPs and the general market,

At 1PM EST,

It's safe to say, it's ugly.

HS...coincidently i was at new paltz today. My daughter was accepted there. She likes Marist down the road in Poughkeppie and Iona. Certainly the state school price is right but Iona gave my daughter an academic scholarship which makes it almost the same as a state school. And being unemployed right now gets me all kinds of grants which cut the cost even further. She wants to teach. Teachers on long island make 100k a year in many districts. I wish i went down that road!

Joe,
This is a late post so hope you see it. Check out Thursday Feb 19 edition of Wall Street Journal page D1 for the Walt Mossberg article on a web site for research on choosing a college. The site is www.unigo.com
